Sting has stung anti-drug activists with his support for legalizing marijuana in the U.S. The former Police leader thinks America should use the money it spends on the war on drugs on poverty and eco issues instead.

[lastfm]Sting[/lastfm] said, “The war on drugs has failed but it’s worse than that. It is actively harming our society. People who genuinely need help can’t get it. Neither can people who need medical marijuana to treat terrible diseases.”

The musician urged fans to support the Drug Policy Alliance that wants those jailed for non violent drug infractions to be released from prison.

DARE, which is an anti-drug organization that teaches school kids about the dangers of drug use, said “Sting should stick to singing and not meddle in matters he doesn’t understand.”

[lastfm]Sting[/lastfm] will stick to singing, and playing his most celebrated songs with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl on June 15th.
