The only known audio recording of the infamous 1966 interview of the Beatles, where the group states that they are “bigger than Jesus,” will be auctioned in the coming months. The tape is estimated to sell for $20,000.
The recording took place August 17th, 1966 at Toronto’s King Edward Hotel. [lastfm]John Lennon[/lastfm] is asked about his controversial statement that the [lastfm]Beatles[/lastfm] were more popular than Jesus, and Lennon and McCartney joke about how long they expect the Beatles to go on as a band.
Seriously, that’s all that happens.
According to Rolling Stone, a young Beatles fan made the tape and tried to sell the recording back in the ’60s, when there was no interest. The reels sat in a drawer for 40 years, and finally the auction house Bonhams & Butterfields will sell the recording.
