Ronnie James Dio, the iconic [lastfm]Black Sabbath[/lastfm], [lastfm]Rainbow[/lastfm], [lastfm]Dio[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Heaven & Hell[/lastfm] vocalist passed away on Sunday after succumbing to a battle with stomach cancer.
Born Ronald James Padavona, [lastfm]Dio[/lastfm] began his music career in 1958 and performed regularly up until his last years.
In a statement made by his wife and manager, Wendy Dio has expressed the following:
Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.
Dio is known within the world of metal for popularizing the act of “throwing horns.” In addition to his musical legacy, the performer was an avid collector of medieval armor and weaponry.
