On the eve of the United States soccer team’s first match of the 2010 World Cup, [lastfm]Weezer[/lastfm] released a free track on iTunes in tribute, entitled “Represent!”

Starting with a grandiose string section, a strong drum beat then kicks in and [lastfm]Weezer[/lastfm] delivers a harder-edged track in line with its latest release, “Raditude.”

This is the second straight World Cup where [lastfm]Weezer[/lastfm] lead singer [lastfm]Rivers Cuomo[/lastfm] has been involved with a soccer-themed release. Four years ago, Cuomo penned “My Day Is Coming” in honor of the ’06 US team, which went 0-2-1 and failed to advance out of group play.

Here’s hoping “Represent!” doesn’t bring the same bad luck. The US tied England 1-1 on Saturday and will take to the field on Friday morning against Algeria.
