Slovenia broke through at the 13′ minute mark on the goal by midfielder Valter Birsa to take an early 1-0 lead. The U.S. found themselves trailing before half for the second consecutive game.
The United States started the 2nd half down 2-0 but an amazing strike from a poor angle by World Cup veteran Landon Donvoan cut the lead in half.
U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley had the equalizer at the 82′ minute mark of the 2nd half. Coach Bob Bradley, had to feel really good after the goal because it was scored by his son.
At the 86′ minute mark, the United States thought that they were taking the lead when a free kick by Landon Donovan led to a goal by sub Maurice Edu. For undisclosed reasons, the goal was disallowed.
“We asked the ref many times what it was or who it was on and he wouldn’t or couldn’t explain it,” Donovan said. “I don’t know what to think of the call because I didn’t see any foul, just a normal free kick and a goal.”
The entire match was marred by controversy due to bad officiating. Terrible to see a match of this magnitude decided by a man who isn’t even playing.
The United States next match is June 23rd at 7:00AM PST against Algeria. A must win game for the U.S.
