Listen: Peter Gabriel Covers Tom Waits
Some musicians lend their voice and image to sell soft drinks and cars, and others lend it in hopes of making the world a better place. One such talent hoping to raise awareness and bring peace to those in need is former [lastfm]Genesis[/lastfm] frontman [lastfm]Peter Gabriel[/lastfm], who recently covered [lastfm]Tom Waits[/lastfm]‘ “In the Neighborhood” for The Voice Project, a music-based initiative group aimed at raising awareness and support for the war-torn countries in Central East Africa.

Filmed in London on May 26, the solo piano performance is not only streaming on The Voice Project‘s site, but also the sites of non-profit groups Invisible Children, Oxfam America, Resolve Uganda, WITNESS and HOPE Campaign.
In the video, before Gabriel begins to play, he says:
One of the interesting things about music is that it seems to plug directly into the emotion, and so I wasn’t at all surprise when I heard these Ugandan mothers couldn’t get to their sons in normal ways, but when they started singing music, it somehow touched them in a place that nothing else could reach. Music can do that, and if we can make the chain, and we can make the link here, I’m sure we can help to make a difference.
This is “In the Neighborhood,” this is one of my favorite [lastfm]Tom Waits[/lastfm] songs. It’s quite hymn-like, but he’s such an amazing lyricist, it really is a very beautiful picture. A beautiful, beautiful piece of writing and I’ve always liked it.
Other musicians who’ve lent their name and voice to The Voice Project include [lastfm]Andrew Bird[/lastfm], [lastfm]Har Mar Superstar[/lastfm] and [lastfm]R.E.M.[/lastfm]‘s [lastfm]Mike Mills[/lastfm].
Not only is Gabriel‘s rendition beautiful, but it’s wonderful to see musicians lend their name for something beautiful, not commercial.
