The now 63-year-old musician claims that his life didn’t truly begin until he was 43 because he suffered from severe substance abuse issues. And that if he hadn’t been so passionate about music and his career his addiction would have claimed his life.
[lastfm]Sir Elton John[/lastfm] gives advice to the youth who are curious about experimentation with drugs and discusses the man behind the colored lenses and what finally drove him to sober-up, calling it his ‘greatest achievement.’

The rocket man realized he couldn’t really begin to live until he said goodbye to drugs and alcohol. He parted with his addictions in 1990 and got sober. He said it wasn’t until he got sober that he was able to live a normal life and fall in love. And he did find love, Sir Elton John was married to David Furnish in 2005.

He said: “My greatest achievement in life was getting sober and clean because I was a real mess. That happened in 1990…I don’t know how I kept my career going with my drug consumption but I did because I loved to work. If I hadn’t worked I’d probably be dead.”
He spoke at the launch of his new album “The Union” in London saying:
If you can do it, and everyone’s going to do it I think because they want to try it, then try and get it over with as quickly as possible, because it’s a f***ing waste of time. I spent time with [lastfm](Lady) Gaga[/lastfm] last week, and she said, ‘You know I got my cocaine over with by the time I was 20. Thank God. I didn’t get mine over with until I was 43.
Giving praise to the young stars who were able to overcome their substance issues at a much younger age.
