Last week we told you that [lastfm]Jimmy Page[/lastfm] is being sued for copyright infringement by singer/songwriter [lastfm]Jake Holmes[/lastfm], who originally authored the track in 1967 — two years before [lastfm]Led Zeppelin[/lastfm] recorded their version of the influential rock ‘n’ roll song.

Well now, here’s your chance to listen to the original and decide for yourself. Also below the belt, other tracks [lastfm]Led Zeppelin[/lastfm] is said to have ripped off.

Now, we’re not saying [lastfm]Jake Holmes[/lastfm] is a liar, but [lastfm]Led Zeppelin[/lastfm] is undoubtedly one of the greatest rock bands to ever exist, so excuse our wounded heart for refusing to give into the copyright infringement claim so quickly.

It’s bad enough Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and orgasms turned out to be lies — we can’t take another blow! Oh, wait… Jesus just told us that last one is actually real. Huh? Who knew! Maybe there is hope left in this world!

So, here’s the thing, a person can’t copyright a chord progression (i.e., guitar riff), but a person can copyright a melody. We don’t know what that all means, necessarily, but we learned it once upon a time between exams and keg stands and thought we’d throw it out there for your wise minds to consider.

This is not the first time [lastfm]Led Zeppelin[/lastfm] has been accused of ripping off songwriters. The music for “Whole Lotta Love” came from the [lastfm]Willie Dixon[/lastfm]-written Muddy Water‘s 1962 track “You Need Love,” along with part of the lyrics. The band settled with Dixon out of court in 1985.

Other songs Zeppelin allegedly ripped partly or fully off:

  • [lastfm]Howlin’ Wolf[/lastfm]‘s “Killing Floor,” herein “The Lemon Song”
  • [lastfm]Bobby Parker[/lastfm]’s “Watch Your Step,” herein “Moby Dick”
  • [lastfm]Moby Grape[/lastfm]‘s “Never,” herein “Since I’ve Been Lovin’ You”
  • [lastfm]Spirit[/lastfm]‘s “Taurus,” herein “Stairway to Heaven”

Listen to “Dazed and Confused” as performed by [lastfm]Jake Holmes[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Led Zeppelin[/lastfm] and judge for yourself. Also, just because, [lastfm]Spirit[/lastfm]‘s “Taurus,” which is — sadly — 100 percent “Stairway to Heaven.”

  • Do you think [lastfm]Jimmy Page[/lastfm] ripped off [lastfm]Jake Holmes[/lastfm]?
