the cult 101 JACKs 5th Show: The Cult Makes Dark, Mysterious Love To Jack’s 5th Show

Unquestionably one of the bigger draws of the night, [lastfm]The Cult[/lastfm] packed the seats at Jack’s 5th Show for a night of shadowy goth-rock complete with a sheath of swirling smoke, spellbinding lights and a commanding frontman that still oozes sex-symbol domination.

Lead singer Ian Astbury has the ability to entrance his loyal followers with his wailing vocals and raw energy he brings to the stage while keeping a haze of mystery around his onstage persona, such as: what was the deal with the white tail clipped to his pants? It’s a mystery better left unsolved, but one thing is for sure, [lastfm]The Cult[/lastfm] still knows how to ignite that fire in women and apparently has no shortage of a tambourine supply.

[lastfm]The Cult[/lastfm] took over Jack’s 5th Show playing their array of goth/new wave 80s classics with an explosive energy and domineering stage presence that had all eyes locked on the men in leather. Ian Astbury performed in true rockstar fashion, whipping around the microphone cord as well as his jet black hair alongside guitarist Billy Duffy who showed off his fancy windmill arm moves while flawlessly strumming heavy guitar hooks.

Not only did [lastfm]The Cult[/lastfm] give the audience a musical treat with hit songs like “Sweet Soul Sister,” “Fire Woman,” and “She Sells Sanctuary,” but Astbury continually threw tambourine after tambourine out into the audience –six in total– and at the end of the set, the rest of the band cleaned out their musical inventory by throwing out more goodies to those close enough to catch the flying picks and sticks. Just another reason to always buy the seats up front, they end up practically paying for themselves in bragging rights.

[lastfm]The Cult[/lastfm] had the whole amphitheater out of the seats and sacrificing their entire bodies over to the sound of the music with each attendee swaying back and forth in unison, arms raised to the goth gods’ musical scripture. Get a little taste of the magic from their heavy set from some fan captured videos of the performance:
