Roger Waters Talks Media, The Meaning Of Life, And Bo Diddley In ’80s Interviews
It is turning out to be an eventful 2010 for [lastfm]Roger Waters[/lastfm]. He briefly reconciled and reunited with his former Pink Floyd bandmate [lastfm]David Gilmour[/lastfm] at the Hoping Foundation charity gig in England last July. And in what is certainly among the most anticipated rock events of the year, this fall he embarked on a world tour, performing a newly staged, 30th anniversary version of his former band’s classic, The Wall.
In his career as a songwriter, Waters has tackled personal and social issues, challenged the music business, and produced thought-provoking and deeply moving music that has impacted the world. So in some ways it’s little surprise he landed in the news recently, with the Anti-Defamation League accusing him of anti-Semitic messaging in images accompanying the song “Goodbye Blue Sky.” Waters countered this claim in a letter to UK newspaper The Independent–and recent shows indicate he’s changed the video to erase any confusion as to his intent.
For more insight into where Waters’ head is at, we turn to a set of interviews he did in the ’80s and early ’90s, talking about the media, psychotherapy, Bo Diddley, and the meaning of life.
Hugely successful upon its release, Pink Floyd’s The Wall was one of the best selling albums of 1980 in the United States. It’s gone on to be one of the best-selling double albums of all time, and is also among the top five best-selling albums of all time in the US.
