Fans of [lastfm]The Beastie Boys [/lastfm] have been worried and waiting for a while now. After Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland last year, the band’s future was up in the air. Fortunately, after undergoing surgery in July 2009, the rapper said that he was “healthy, strong and hopeful.”
Now that all three rappers are back together, we can expect their new album, Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 in stores for the Spring of 2011. What ever happened to “Part 1”?
How can a band release a “Part 2” of a series when the first installment doesn’t even exist? Well, if you’re The Beastie Boys, playing by the rules has never been all that crucial to making good music.
The fabled “Part 1” of the series was originally the intentional release – production was halted when Yauch was hospitalized. The tracks have not been changed, only the title; all 16 tracks which would have compromised the first episode will now grace this new set, while the material originally recorded for “Part 2” will be pushed back. What will that set be named? “Part 1”? “Part 3”? Something else entirely? Who knows.
Yauch tries his best to clear it up:
“I know it’s weird and confusing, but at least we can say unequivocally that Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 is coming out on time, which is more than I can say about Part 1, and really is all that matters in the end. We just kept working and working on various sequences for part 2, and after a year and half of spending days on end in the sequencing room trying out every possible combination, it finally became clear that this was the only way to make it work.”
Here is the tracklist for Hot Sauce Committee Part 2:
