Los Angeles Football Stadium Has a Name…Still No Team
The proposed NFL Stadium in downtown Los Angeles headed by the AEG Investment Group announced today that the stadium naming rights have officially been granted to…..
Ladies and gentlemen, AEG presents….FARMERS FIELD…
In a $650 MILLION DOLLAR DEAL announced today, Farmers Insurance purchased the naming rights for the yet-to-be-built Downtown Los Angeles NFL football stadium.
That would explain the Farmers Insurance blimp that has been seen circling Los Angeles all day today…
Now for those of you that haven’t been following every waking second of the Los Angeles Needs a Football Team saga, this stadium, nor the naming announcement, guarantees that Los Angeles is getting a football team. Although it is another step in the right direction.
FYI, developers of the AEG backed campaign say the $1 billion dollar project that is now dubbed “Farmers Field“, will be PRIVATELY funded. Meaning, none of your tax dollars.
As you can see, the proposed Farmer’s Field would be built right in Downtown LA and would need renovations and partial demolition to the LA Convention Center before they could even break ground on building this stadium.
In addition to hopefully securing an NFL team for Los Angeles, Farmers Field would also be angling for other huge events like the FIFA World Cup and the NCAA Final Four.
AEG CEO Tim Leiweke has even said that Farmer’s Field should be open and available to host the Super Bowl in 2016.
I for one am all fer it. But the question remains…..what NFL team would move to Los Angeles or would it be an expansion franchise? And how, would that team, unless it won the Super Bowl in its first year of existence, ever compete with the Raiders as far as fan base goes?
Doesn’t even matter to me. I am a North Carolina transplant and after the 2-14 year my Panthers just had, I will take ANYTHING at this point.
