Could it be? Did Coca-Cola really just give America the secret recipe by accident? NPR’s “This American Life” thinks so, and now JACK FM has the recipe to give to YOU!

In an article printed in the 1979 Atlanta Journal-Constitution, photos from R.R. Evans’ (Coca-Cola creator John Pemberton’s good friend and pharmacist ) leather-bound notebook reveal what is believed as the formula for Coke!

So here it is, in all of its glory:

  • Fluid extract of Coca: 3 drams USP
    Citric acid: 3 oz
    Caffeine: 1 oz
    Sugar: 30 (unclear quantity)
    Water: 2.5 gal
Lime juice: 2 pints, 1 quart
    Vanilla: 1 oz
Caramel: 1.5 oz or more for color
  • The secret 7X flavor (use 2 oz of flavor to 5 gals syrup):
    Alcohol: 8 oz
    Orange oil: 20 drops
    Lemon oil: 30 drops
    Nutmeg oil: 10 drops
    Coriander: 5 drops
    Neroli: 10 drops
    Cinnamon: 10 drops

Since the story first appeared this morning, Coke company spokeswoman Kerry Tressler has already denied the credibility of the recipe. She states:

“Many third parties, including ‘This American Life,’ have tried to crack our secret formula. Try as they might, they’ve been unsuccessful.”

Coke’s archive director Philip Mooney has also commented that the uncovered recipe may be a “precursor” to what we drink today, and probably wasn’t the version that “went to market.”

Still, isn’t going to stop us from making a batch of our own. Now where can we find coca extract at this hour…
