The greatest gift on Mother’s day? Why, MUSICAL TIME TRAVEL, of course. No, we don’t mean you should record the first ten songs that play on the oldies station- that would be a terribly lazy gift to give the woman who gave you life (besides that’s what we gave her last year).
No, we’re talking a musical BLAST FROM THE PAST, one that’ll have your Momma dancing and groovin’ like that baby from Ally McBeal (that reference was for her, not you).
Of course, what good is a mix tape when you’ve already heard all the songs on it?
We don’t want her to think we just grabbed a few song titles off her old vinyl. We did that two years ago. So here’s our newer, more improved list.
Snoop Dogg – “I Love My Momma”
Your Mother may not be a fan of hip hop, but she’ll like this gangsta tune. Even gangstas love their Mommas.
Lenny Kravitz – “Thinking of You”
After his mother died in the 90’s, Kravitz penned this song as an homage to her memory.
Stevie Wonder – “I Just Called to Say I Love You”
While not exactly themed for Mother’s Day, this tune by the legendary Stevie Wonder expresses how something as simple as a telephone call can make even the dullest day into something to remember.
Merle Haggard – “Mama Tried”
Merle Haggard’s classic tune is about a mother who tries her best to raise her son right, but he’s just a born rebel. Sound familiar?
The Beatles – “In My Life”
What? The Beatles? Actually, this one works perfectly. We guess they have a place on every music list no matter the subject, huh?
2Pac – “Dear Mama”
This song needs no description. It is THE quintessential hip hop Mother’s Day anthem.
Boyz II Men – “A Song For Mama”
This one is just a song about men (or boyz) expressing what their Mama meant to them. Very touching song that’ll draw a few tears.
