JACK FM’s MAN CAVE includes an XBox, a Playstation 3, AND, (yes and) AND a Nintendo Wii. So to celebrate the illustrious gaming some lucky JACK FM listener is about to be indulging in, I decided to tackle naming the Top 10 Video Games of All Time….
Before I even start, just know, this was almost impossible to narrow down all the video games EVER into a Top 10 list. I will go ahead and tell you Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time nerds that you’re going to be disappointed but there will be a debate section later on in the countdown. For now, let’s begin…..
10) Guitar Hero- (2005 Playstation 3)
Green, green, red, red, red, orange, green, green, green, bluuuuuuuuuue….When Guitar Hero debuted in 2005 no one could for see the success and undeniable pop culture phenomenon it would become. 25 million+ units and over 2 billion dollars in profits later, Guitar Hero’s place in the Top 10 Video Games of all time isn’t up for argument. The Guitar Hero: Third Eye Blind Edition notwithstanding. Check out this perfect score performance on 100% Expert, Through the Fire and Flames…
9) Mike Tyson’s Punchout!! (1987 OG Nintendo)
There is no argument, there is only fact. The original Mike Tyson’s Punchout!! on the OG Nintendo still stands as the greatest boxing video game of all time. King Hippo, Piston Honda, Soda Pop Pinski and even Iron Mike himself were no match for the fury that was Little Mac.
8) Pac-Man (1980 Arcade/Atari)
You know this is a tough list when Pac-Man can’t crack the Top 5. Pac-Man is easily the biggest pop culture figure of all time from the video game world. Pac-Man is and was an icon. It’s a shame he passed away in 1998 due to complications from scurvy. We’ll miss you Pac.
7) Tecmo Bowl (1987 NES)
By all rights, the Madden series probably SHOULD be in this countdown instead of Tecmo Bowl but uh…..I’m a purist at heart and people take Madden way too seriously these days. Madden and the like are way, way too real. I want a game. I want a football game where Bo Jackson can go on a run play that lasts the entire quarter…like this one…
6) Call of Duty: World at War (2008 Xbox/PS3/DS)
This was a tough, tough call. Lot of great first person shooters out there these days. (Halo, Gears of War, etc) A lot of Call of Duty versions to choose from as well. I choose World at War mainly because it’s the one that I have spent the most time playing. Until I inevitably get really, really pissed during a gaming session and take it out of the console and chop it up with scissors only to return to Game Stop the following weekend to buy it again. Oh Call of Duty. Their commercial for the last Call of Duty release, Call of Duty: Black Ops, might have been the greatest video game commercial of all time….
5) Golden Eye 007 (1997 N64)
You COULD argue that Duke Nuken or Wolfenstein truly started the 1st person shooter craze in the video game world but I cite Golden Eye 007 as the real tipping point. I cannot even begin to fathom how many study hours were lost in the late 90’s due to Golden Eye. Honestly, you COULD make a case for this as greatest video game of all time. I would honestly smother an orphan with a pillow if it meant I had my old 64 and Golden Eye game back.
4) Street Fighter II (Capcom 1991)
Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Brutal: Paws of Fury….there have been TONS of very quality fighting games over the years but Street Fighter II really is the one that started it all. Ryu, Guile, Blanka… these were better friends to me than anyone at Northwest Middle School ever was. Street Fighter II rates so high on this list if for no other reason than….HADOUKEN!!!
3) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002 Rockstar Games)
Shooting down Police helicopters with a bazooka? Stealing cars at will? Picking up hookers then beating them up and taking their money? The Grand Theft Auto franchise is easily the most controversial video game series of all time and for good reason. With blindingly deep worlds to explore and a super star cast of voice over actors, Grand Theft Auto was something gamers had never seen before and the soundtrack to Vice City made it a true cross-over success and kept Flock of Seagulls in royalty checks for at least one more decade.
2) World of Warcraft (Activision)
This beast was loosed on the world with its first installment, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans in 1994. Now in 2011, there are who the hell knows how many different installments of this franchise and approximately 567 billion people play World of Warcraft every day. It has grown to such unbelievable proportions that many feel that WOW is the SkyTel that James Cameron was warning us about. See for yourself.
So here we are. The #1 Video Game of All Time. There was never any question. Never any debate. It is, definitively THE GREATEST VIDEO GAME EVER to grace this, or any other planet. And it is….
1) Super Mario Kart 64 (1997 N64)
The original Super Mario Kart on SNES was solid but the addition of 3-D graphics, 4-player capability and expanded race courses made Super Mario Kart 64 the most addictive thing in the 90’s second only to crack cocaine. I swear. I honestly may have played this game 128 billion times. That’s a rough estimate but I don’t think anyone can honestly argue AGAINST this pic as #1 overall. Men, women, children and senior citizens all agree, Super Mario Kart 64 is straight up BAD ASS. For those of you that could never quite get that super-duper shortcut jump done on Rainbow Road, check out the video below…..it should explain everything…
Feel free to comment on what you think I left out, who should be the honorable mentions, and any other beefs, gripes, kudos, or grievances you may have with this list…..
