Even when he was one of the Leaders of the New School, Busta Rhymes was also a member of the Chess Club.
Yes, Busta Rhymes always had a love for chess. The strategy, the tactics, the joy of beating your opponent in a thinking man’s sport. But where chess is thought of as a dignified game, Busta felt that victory should always be celebrated loudly and enthusiastically.
This joy led to the hit that we celebrate today. It was Busta’s trademark way of telling his opponent’s that he had, in fact, put them in check.
Yet, Busta Rhymes was not the only rapper with a distinct love of the game that features rooks, bishops, and pawns.
The Wu-Tang Clan also had a great love of the game, especially the Ol’ Dirty Bastard. When word leaked of the “Woo Hah” celebration of both check and mate, Ol’ Dirty Bastard asked to be a part of it. And Busta agreed.
Which makes Today’s Old Skool Joint of the Week a Double Shot of “Woo-Hah, Got You All In Check“-
