Peter Gabriel is continuing his streak of releasing orchestral albums with his upcoming Live Blood CD.

Due April 24, the concert recording features Gabriel re-interpreting some of his best-known songs (including “In Your Eyes,” “Red Rain” and “Biko”) backed by an orchestra (and, notably, no guitarists or drummers).

Also included are renditions of Paul Simon‘s “The Boy In The Bubble” and Lou Reed‘s “The Power Of The Heart.”  Gabriel did studio recordings of both songs for 2010′s Scratch My Back, an album of orchestral covers.

The original concept for Scratch My Back was that all of the artists who Gabriel covered would, in turn, cover him.  It didn’t quite work out, as David Bowie and Neil Young (among others) didn’t return the favor.  However, some did, including Simon (who covered “Biko”) and Reed (“Solsbury Hill”).

After the Scratch My Back project, Gabriel re-recorded his own songs in the studio (also with an orchestra) for 2011′s New Blood.  Live Blood was recorded during the tour for that album, at the Hammersmith Apollo on March 23, 2011.

Gabriel is fairly active on Twitter, and based on his recent Tweets, it seems he will be reissuing a live concert from his vaults (“Remixing PG live in Athens 87 in HD and 5.1″) and is also working on a new album (“Writing new fast groove based songs”).   Gabriel has historically taken close to a decade to record  albums of new material (ten years passed between 1992′s Us and 2002′s Up, and eight between Up and Scratch My Back). Needless to say, there are no release dates on anything yet.
