When Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider started a brief stint as club owner Dennis in Broadway’s Rock of Ages in fall 2010, he made a point of owning his theater newcomer status – no diva stuff, not that that’s the brazen rocker’s way. “I wasn’t a bull in a china shop,” he said, alluding to others who have been stunt-casted.
But by the time Snider released his album of showtunes last week, his confidence was high and Broadway was old hat, thanks to newfound friends Patti LuPone and Bebe Neuwirth, who just so happen to be musical theater icons. CBS Local sat down with Snider – whose theatricality with Twisted Sister has been no secret since the early ’80s – to discuss Dee Does Broadway and its famous collaborators, which also include Cyndi Lauper and his Celebrity Apprentice castmate Clay Aiken. He explains how his Rock of Ages connections helped the Broadway covers album come together.
Released the same day as Dee Does Broadway, Snider’s self-penned memoir Shut Up and Give Me the Mic has kept him quite busy. Looking forward, however, Snider says he’s not ruling out another Broadway role. In fact, he says there’s been some interest in him joining the cast of a production where they dress in drag – a costume Snider is no stranger to.
