“Prometheus” Reveals Stephen Stills’ “Love The One You’re With” Still A Hit In 2093

The music of the ’60s and ’70s has proven to be incredibly enduring, and Prometheus writers Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts predict that Stephen Stills’ solo classic “Love The One You’re With” will still resonate long after he’s gone.

Prometheus, billed as something of a “prequel” to Alien, takes place in the year 2093, decades before the events of Alien.

In a brief scene, the ship Prometheus’ captain Janek (played by Idris Elba), startles Meredith Vickers, a corporate employee supervising the mission (played by Charlize Theron), by playing a squeezebox. When asked what it was, Janek remarks that the instrument used to be owned by Stephen Stills, and later plays a brief bit of Stills’ “Love The One You’re With.”

“Love The One You’re With” was originally released on Stills’ 1970 self-titled solo debut, and the song featured backing vocals from his CSN bandmates David Crosby and Graham Nash, as well as John Sebastian of The Lovin’ Spoonful and Rita Coolidge.

An accordion is a form of squeezebox (which, by the way, was not featured on the original recording of the song).

It wasn’t the only 20th century pop culture reference in the film: the android David (played by Michael Fassbender) is obsessed over Lawrence Of Arabia and changes his appearance to look more like Peter O’Toole in that film.
