The Midwest Rock ‘n’ Roll Express tour, featuring Styx, REO Speedwagon and Ted Nugent wrapped up July 8 in Bangor, Maine, with a surprise that thrilled all the Damn Yankees fans in the audience.

Nugent and Styx’s Tommy Shaw were bandmates in the ’90s supergroup Damn Yankees (along with bassist/singer Jack Blades). But until the end of the Midwest Rock ‘n’ Roll Express tour, the Nuge and Shaw didn’t jam on stage. Nugent surprised the audience and even Shaw when he hit the stage for “Coming Of Age.”

The Nuge left Damn Yankees in 1994, and the remaining two members formed the appropriately named duo Shaw/Blades.

Blades, unfortunately, wasn’t at the July 8 gig, so it was only a 2/3 Damn Yankees reunion. (Blades is also a member of Night Ranger, who is on tour this summer).

“Working with Brother Ted has been a real treat,” Shaw said in a statement. “To finish the tour with Ted joining Styx on stage for a killer performance of ‘Coming of Age’ caught me off-guard how powerful it was. I swear Nugent was levitating.”

Though the Midwest Rock ‘n’ Roll Express is no longer chugging along, fans can check out Styx on their upcoming tour that kicks off July 19 in Interlochen, MI. Go here for more tour dates.
