Life is full of surprises. When plotted correctly, they can either make or break one’s day.

Marriage proposals seem to be one of the most tricky breeds of surprises. Especially when they don’t turn out as planned.

According to deadspin, a loyal Cubs fan named Greg and apparently a loyal boyfriend at that, proposed to his girlfriend via the scoreboard at a Chicago Cubs game.

The catch; Greg’s girlfriend Erica had left her seat to retrieve beer during the half-hour long bottom of the fifth. The sacred words, typically for one time use, appeared on the screen during the time that Erica was away from her seat. Buzzkill, literally.

It is a crying shame, but at least the world is informed that Greg had intended to propose to his girlfriend this way. It’s the thought the counts eh?

Moral of the story for any fellas planning to pop the big question on a scoreboard, do not let your honey leave her seat or you’ll be sorry!
