Steve Vai is currently on tour for his new record, The Story Of Light, a concept album with a long cast of characters. In a recent interview, Vai told CBS Local that he was “casting” the album even as he was writing it. In his mind, Tom Waits and Pink would be idea to play two of the roles, should he ever produce a movie based on the album.

As it turns out, both musicians have acting on their resumes: pop star Pink co-stars in the upcoming Gwyneth Paltrow/Mark Ruffalo film, Thanks For Sharing. And Tom Waits has a long filmography that includes Rumble Fish, Down By Law, Mystery Men and The Book Of Eli.

Of course, Vai could always cast himself. He came to the attention of many rock fans after playing the role of “Jack Butler” (aka The Devil’s guitar player) in the 1986 film Crossroads. That film, of course, ended with a guitar dual between Vai and star Ralph Maccio’s characters.

Steve Vai’s The Story Of Light, which features guest appearances by Aimee Mann and The Voice finalist Beverly McClellan, is out now. His tour extends through mid-October.
