With his unmatched legion of fans, Elvis has no problem attracting big spenders interested in his past belongings – except his dirty underwear. While a Bible belonging to The King sold double what it was expected to over the weekend, soiled underpants belonging to Elvis failed to attract a bidder.
As the BBC reports, a Bible given to Presley by his uncle Vester and aunt Clettes Presley for Christmas 1957 drew a final bid of about $94,000 (£59,000) at an auction at Stockport, England’s Omega Auctions on Saturday. The Bible, which features Elvis’ name embossed in gold on its cover, was originally expected to sell for £25,000.
Elvis reportedly used the Bible for the rest of his life, jotting down notes on its pages. The bible is accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Vester Presley, Vernon Presley’s brother.
As for the stained undies, those were part of the same auction as the Bible, from the massive collection of Elvis memorabilia from one British man on the anniversary of The King’s death. Presley reportedly wore the briefs, which were designed to not show under his signature jumpsuits, shortly before his death in 1977. The highest bid for the underwear reached £5,000, thus failing to meet the reserve price of £7,000 and not selling.
