Led Zeppelin’s Weekend Countdown… But To What?

Led Zeppelin's "III"

Led Zeppelin’s “III”

Over the weekend, Led Zeppelin kicked off a countdown to an unspecified event on their Facebook page. On Saturday, they posted the word “five” (in the font that the band used on their The Song Remains The Same album cover), leading to a flurry of online speculation: Is there a 5 disc box set coming out?  Is there a lost album between 1971′s Led Zeppelin (often referred to as “IV”) and the follow-up, 1973′s Houses Of The Holy that would now be seeing the light of day?

On Sunday, they followed with the word “four,” leading fans to believe that this was simply a countdown. Earlier today, they posted “III,” so the countdown theory seems to be correct. But a countdown to what?

While some fans are getting their hopes up that it is leading up to an announcement of a reunion, that seems unlikely.  Robert Plant decided against reuniting with the band after their last big reunion concert in December of 2007. At that point, he was working with bluegrass singer Alison Krauss, and their collaborative album, Raising Sand, went on to win six Grammy awards. Since then, Plant left that project, started and ended another group (The Band Of Joy), and is now working with his latest backing combo, The Sensational Shape Shifters, on a new album

What seems more likely than a reunion is an announcement of the long-rumored release of that December 2007 reunion show at England’s O2 Arena in London. The concert, which featured Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones with Jason Bonham on drums, got almost universally great reviews, and has been widely bootlegged.
