Legendary guitarist and Morrissey nemesis, Johnny Marr is preparing to release his latest solo album The Messenger, scheduled to hit stores next year. To keep his name in front of the media, he’s popped up on various radio shows as of late.

During a performance for BBC 2′s Dermot O’ Leary radio show, the singer/guitarist treated fans to new material, “New Town Velocity,” as well as his version of The Smiths‘ “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want.”

The song has touched many a fan and artist since its original debut as a B-side on the 1984 release William, It Was Really Nothing, which featured another track that went onto hit status, “How Soon Is Now.” In addition to “Let Me Get What I Want’s”appearance in soundtracks for Pretty in Pink500 Days of Summer, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’, countless artists have taken a swing at the classic including The Decemberists, Franz Ferdinand, OK Go, Deftones, Amanda Palmer, Hootie & The Blowfish, Muse, Third Eye Blind, Kate Walsh, The Dream Academy, and more.

Stream the track via 80′s Legacy site, Slicing Up Eyeballs.

Both Marr and Morrissey have said in recent statements that a rekindling of The Smiths is not likely. In May Marr told NME “I don’t not speak to him, because that implies a certain standoff or whatever. He’s doing his thing and I’m doing mine, and we go through periods of time when we’re in communication and at times when we’re not. I’m not sure he wants to communicate, so I’ll just carry on doing what I’m doing, and live my life and be a musician.”

Cementing the same sentiment, reps for Morrissey told HitFix.com “The Smiths will NEVER get back together.”
