First released in the United Kingdom where the band was formed, the anniversary officially takes place at 00:01 GMT on Sunday. For those of us that don’t live across the pond, that is 8 pm ET this Saturday. If you’d like to participate in this “global playback event” visit pinkfloyd.com and participate thru Twitter by tweeting memories, thoughts, and pictures, using the hashtag, #DarkSide40.

The 40-year-old album runs just over 40 minutes, and it was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, England. It also features one of the most memorable album covers in all of music.

The band teamed up with the designer of the famous prism album cover, Storm Thorgerson, and the website is displaying a new kind of prism design every day until March 23rd. Click here for a full gallery of Dark Side variations.
