Thursday night (April 25), Rod Stewart took the stage at L.A.’s intimate Troubadour club in West Hollywood in front of 300 very lucky hand-selected fans.
The free, invite-only gig was all in part to highlight his first new written material in two decades off Stewart’s forthcoming album, Time, due out on May 7. Stewart performed a 10-song set of new material mixed with older hits.
Being his first time appearing at the historic Troubadour, the venue that helped kickstart the music careers of Elton John, The Eagles and more, Stewart said opted for the Troub’s cozy club setting over the Staples Center simply because “it’s more fun,” and his audience couldn’t have agreed more.
During his performance, Stewart showcased six brand-new tracks off Time, which received warm responses and cheers from the eager crowd. Throughout the show, Stewart revealed the personal stories that inspired the lyrics, such as in his heartbreaking divorce ballad “It’s Over,” a “subject I know a little something about,” he quipped.
For his older songs, Stewart avoided his very successful Great American Songbook series, but also avoided his harder rocking classics for more mainstream fare, including “Forever Young,” “Rhythm Of My Heart,” his cover of Van Morrison’s “Have I Told You Lately” and “You Wear It Well.”
