Prince Gives Money To Portland High School Jazz Band To Compete In New York
Your best friend’s mom’s grandmother held a backyard bake sale to fund your trip to the science museum? That’s a cool story, but it can’t compare to Prince using money he earned at a show to fun a Portland high school jazz band to go to a competition in New York City.
After Prince played at Roseland in Portland, Oregon on April 21, the philanthropic purple prince gave the money to the American Music Program Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra. Now the jazz studemnts will get to compete at the Essentially Ellington Competition & Festival next week–all on Prince’s dime!
Artistic Director,Thara Memory said that although Prince is one of the biggest musicians out there, his students weren’t “starstruck” because those cool kids are constantly meeting “great musicians.”
“They’re not really starstruck about Prince,” Memory said. “He is just one of the artists that they know about. I think they’d be more starstruck if he walked into a rehearsal and gave them some pointers. I think that would be the next level.”
