Lou Reed is in high spirits after a recent liver transplant that took him off tour earlier this spring. The 71-year-old rocker underwent surgery at the Cleveland Clinic last month, assuring fans on Facebook Saturday (June 1) that he is on the road to recovery.

“I am a triumph of modern medicine, physics and chemistry,” he wrote. “I am bigger and stronger than ever.”

After cancelling five shows (including two at Coachella) in April due to the malady, the former Velvet Underground founder assured fans he’d back on stage in no time.

“I look forward to being on stage performing, and writing more songs to connect with your hearts and spirits and the universe well into the future,” he wrote.

While Reed maintains a positive outlook on the situation, his wife, artist Laurie Anderson, explained the severity of his condition in a recent interview with The Times of London. “It’s as serious as it gets. He was dying. You don’t get it for fun,” she said in the interview. “I don’t think he’ll ever totally recover from this, but he’ll certainly be back to doing [things] in a few months.”

She added that the surgery itself went “very well” and that she is “very happy.” The couple opted to travel to the industry-leading Cleveland Clinic for the procedure after determining that New York hospitals are “dysfunctional,” according to the newspaper.

In his Facebook post, Reed lauds the long-term health benefits of the Chinese martial art t’ai chi, which Anderson said he has already been able to practice in the wake of surgery.
