Roger Dean, a brilliant psychedelic prog-rock cover artist behind covers for bands like Yes and Asia, is suing James Cameron for his 2009 film Avatar because he says that the planet Pandora, the fantastical world that the movie took place on, was inspired by his art.
Some of the artistic aspects that Dean has claimed are his own include stone arches and floating islands. The lawsuit documentation says that Dean is “recognised internationall for architectural conepts” and that his Avatar-similar art can be seen in books like 1975’s Views, 1984’s Magnetic Storm and 2008’s Dragon’s Dream.
The well-known cover artist wants 20th Century Fox to “cease and desist from any further reproduction, distribution, transmission or other use.” Dean is not only asking them to stop using his alleged ideas but is also asking for a hefty $50million dollars.
