#TBT: Listen To The Evolution of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” On Her 30th Musical Anniversary

By Nadia Noir

It’s been almost thirty years since Cyndi Lauper released She’s So Unusual, her debut solo album that included songs like “She Bop,” “Time After time,” and “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.”

To celebrate the anniversary, Lauper is re-releasing the album on April 1st (unless that’s like the meanest April Fools joke ever).

Despite Lauper’s reputation as a pop-punk powerhouse, her original version of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” wasn’t remotely poppy; it was straight-up, hard-edged ’80s-style punk rock.

Listen to the evolution of the track below into something that became part of Lauper’s iconic soound.

And just for fun, here are five of our favorite Cyndi Lauper songs:

“Girls Just Want To Have Fun”

“Time After Time”

“I Drove All Night”

“True Colors”

“She Bop”
