Watch Eddie Vedder’s Poignant Cover of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’
Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder just wants peace.
A week after his anti-war plea onstage at a Pearl Jam concert in England, Vedder continues his fight for peace during a show in Portugal. This time, he performed a cover of John Lennon‘s “Imagine,” a song he referenced on his recent blog post defending his pro-peace tendencies. Onstage alone with an acoustic guitar, the venue erupts in a sing along while waving their lighters in the air.
“I think it is the most powerful song ever written,” Vedder said prior to his rendition, according to SPIN. “Which is why I have never played it. It seems like maybe there is a reason to play it. If you’d like join me or use your voices or hold a light there might be some people out there that need to know they are not alone.”
While many criticized Vedder for his anti-war plea and some fans, including Israelis, felt that Vedder was leaning in favor of Palestine in the two sides’ conflict, musician Krist Novoselic took Vedder’s side. The former Nirvana bassist took to his personal blog yesterday (July 20), to thank Vedder for “speaking up for peace in our world.”
