Are we human or are we dancer or are we out of our f***ing mind?
In a new survey conducted by the online streaming service Blinkbox Music, over 2,000 adults voted for which past or present Top 40 song had the most bizarre lyrics. After the week closed, The Killers topped the list with their song “Human,” knocking artists like Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift from the pedestal for writing songs that were too pedestrian and easy to comprehend.
The survey, which suggested the line, “are we human or are we dancer?” is the most confusing won the competition, earning The Killers the illustrious title of “Most Baffling Rock Band.” This isn’t the first time songwriter and frontman (and general weirdo) Brandon Flowers had received mixed feedback on his hit tune. In previous interviews, Flowers has stated that the line was based on a Hunter S. Thompson quote: “we’re raising a generation of dancers”.
“I think I’m allowed to do whatever I want,” says singer Flowers, as he often does when he is called to defend his “Human” lyrics.
Managing director Mark Bennett said: “It’s true that song lyrics are sometimes as crazy as a box of frogs, but then that’s show business. It would be a really boring world if everything was logical and made sense.”
In Flowers’ defense, nearly two-fifths of the survey said they do not hear, understand, or care about the words they hear in pop songs. Go figure.
