El Siete Mares La Playita
3143 Sunset Boulevard

Lightly floured and fried, the flavor of this Tilapia fish taco is subtle, clean and refreshing. Crisp cabbage is accented with fresh chopped cilantro, diced tomato, and the tangy lime juice. The thin coating on the fish is crusted along the edges providing a slight crunch . Nestled into two buttery grilled white corn tortillas, the taco is lathered in a salted mayonnaise based cream sauce and kicked up with a spicy roasted pepper salsa. All the components of this fish taco are perfectly balanced and brisk. The acids, fats, salts, and spices are also happily married to every bite of the roasted banana pepper that comes on the side.

Fried right before your eyes, there is infinite pleasure to be derived from watching your fish browned in a large caldron before it is plucked out of the oil, nestled into a grilled white corn tortilla, and handed to you piping hot. The peppered batter is browned to a crisp and thinly coats the thick and fluffy white fish. The creamy sauce is pleasantly tart and has the perfect consistency to allow it to hang onto the thinly shredded cabbage. A fresh salsa bar offers up a variety of salsas from the traditional to mango and radish relish to top your taco off. The overall balance of textures and subtle flavors make this fish taco a soft and soulful summer snack reminiscent of a beach taco shack.

Guisado’s
2100 East Cesar E Chavez Avenue

The usual long lines outside of Guisado’s Tacos are indicative of a great taco. The hand pressed corn tortillas are made fresh to order while you wait. The dense grilled yellow corn tortillas are moist and chewy. The flakey white fish is topped with arbor chiles and grilled to the point of perfect caramelization before it is settled onto a warm black bean spread. Topped with both red and white shredded cabbage, red-ripe diced tomatoes and fresh cilantro, this fish taco is a hearty meal. The beans and fresh made corn tortilla also add a unique layer of textures and earthy flavors to the traditional fish taco.

Lupita’s Seafood
317 South Broadway

Located in the heart of downtown Los Angleles’ iconic Grand central Market, Lupita’s Seafood is known of their fresh seafood but their fish taco is also worth a shot. Lupita’s fish taco is topped with shredded iceberg lettuce rather than the cabbage used in traditional Baja fish tacos leaving the bubbled flaky crust to bask in the glory of its indelible crunch. The saturated and flavorful batter is just thick enough to hold the moist Swai filet together under the juices of lime, fresh tomatoes and cream sauce.

Ricky’s Fish Taco
1400 North Virgil Avenue

Boasting an original recipe from the Baja Peninsula, Ricky’s Fish tacos are an explosion of flavor. Flawlessly fried to a glorious golden crust, the batter is made with imported Mexican wheat flour and has hints of mustard, paprika and oregano. The intense earthy spices used in the doughy batter are owner Ricky Piña’s secret recipe but one unique ingredient that gives them their robust flavor and yellow tinge is rumored to be mustard. The cream is absolutely delectable. The mayonnaise based sauce is thinned with whole milk and sprinkled with oregano which compliments the batter and holds up nicely on top of the thick and crunchy cabbage. Ricky’s smokey brown tomato salsa is also infused with italian herbs and Mexican spices for a harmonious blend of flavors all throughout. Diced jalapeños and homemade pico de gallo round out every bite with a cool and refreshing zest.

Tacos Baja Ensenada
5385 Whittier Boulevard

The large chunks of batter fried fish in this taco barely fit inside of the grilled tortillas. Poking out from underneath a pile of rough chopped cabbage and tomatoes, this rustic fish taco is coated in a puffy, thick, and salty batter. There are subdued hints of paprika, garlic and herbs in the mix which fully coats flakey white fish. Tacos Baja Ensenada’s fish taco is supreme in size, moisture and taste. Bulbous chunks of saturated batter along the ends of the fish give a good crunch all the way to the last bite. The yellow corn tortillas are moist and hold up under the weight of the cream and salsa. The smokey roasted salsa and seasoned “chiles gueros” add just the right amount of heat to round out the fatty goodness and zestfulness of fresh pico de gallo and lime.
